House at Loch Fyne

2023

Set on the serene shores of Loch Fyne on Scotland’s west coast, this loch-side retreat was designed as an escape from the bustle of city life. Built to replace an old, dilapidated structure, the new house offers a tranquil haven for its owners, blending traditional vernacular aesthetics with modernist touches. The design reimagines the classic form of rural Scottish dwellings, using materials and forms that harmonise with the surroundings while introducing elements of contemporary architecture.

The house is anchored to its site through the use of locally sourced stone, establishing a strong connection to the landscape and paying homage to the area's traditional construction techniques. Timber cladding and zinc roofing are used at higher levels, providing a visual lightness and contrast to the solid base of stone. This material palette reflects the natural textures and colours of the surrounding environment, allowing the house to feel at one with its wooded backdrop and the loch's shoreline.

A key feature of the design is its celebration of the stunning views across the loch. Large, expansive openings are a deliberate nod to modernist sensibilities, creating a seamless visual flow between the inside and outside. The main living area benefits from large glazed sections, allowing natural light to flood the space and providing uninterrupted views of the water and hills beyond. This openness invites the tranquil beauty of the setting into everyday life, enhancing the sense of detachment from the hectic pace of urban living.

The design combines a respect for traditional forms with a clean, modern approach that emphasises simplicity and a deep connection with nature. The result is a beautifully crafted home that offers a perfect retreat - an inviting, calm, and contemplative space where the owners can unwind and fully engage with the spectacular landscape of Scotland’s west coast.
